The Round Up: French Alps Plane Crash

As most of you have probably already seen on the news, flight 4U 9525 crashed in the French Alps on Tuesday killing all on board including co pilot Andres Lubtiz, who has been accused of deliberately crashing the Airbus in order to commit sucide.

When recovering the wreckage of flight 4U 9525, the black box exposed the hidden truth behind this horrific crash. The transcript revealed that the pilot left the cockpit, supposedly to go to the toilet, when Lubtiz locked the door and began descending the plane. The recorder then showed the screaming of the pilot at Lubtiz to open the door. The co-pilot can be heard breathing normally throughout the final minutes of the flight. During the very last moments of the flight, passengers can be heard screaming.

It is believed that Lubtiz had been suffering from depression although the hospital were he had been patient at recently denied treating him for depression. With the discovery of a discarded sick note in his Duesseldorf apartment and confirmation that he attended a medical clinic just days before the crash, the suggestion is that this quiet man was hiding something. That secret may eventually reveal why he took not just his own life but the lives of 149 others.

It is hard to comprehend how someone, even if in the unstable state of mind Lubtiz was believed to be in, could deliberately crash a plane and take the lives of 149 innocent people. It's difficult to imagine how depressed a person could be to destroy not only those lives, but the lives of those countless family members who mourn the passengers of flight 4U 9525. We may never know what was processing through the co pilots mind as he deliberately put that plane in descent, however we can deduce that those innocent lives were not one of them.

Self Diagnosis: The Serious Stuff

In the modern day and age, it’s fairly easy to look up a wide range of scary diseases and illnesses on the internet. Self diagnosis has become a fairly popular new activity, sending many people to the doctor thinking they have a life-threatening illness because of an ache in their small toe.

However, better safe than sorry, and self diagnosis can often be a good thing. Though it is not right to waste the time and money of our free healthcare system, self diagnosis can often be the only way of seeing a problem.

You know yourself better than anyone else does, but sometimes it’s still really difficult to notice when something is amiss. In a physical sense, noticing a pain or irritation may be fairly simple. If any pain lasts for more than a few days, it’s probably best to check it out with a professional. Regular body check ups are incredibly helpful and can pick up on problems quickly. Don’t be afraid to know your own body, it’s easy to spot an irregularity when you know what’s regular.

For mental health, it’s a little different. Many symptoms are hard to notice as they come gradually over time, and may just feel like you're having a bad day or are overreacting about something. Though this may be true, sometimes consistency can mean problems.

It’s hard to notice these sorts of issues because of their progressive worsening. Often, others have to point out or guide a person suffering from these symptoms. However, when you haven't got anyone else around to help you, noticing the signs in your own body is very important.

Some symptoms include:

  • Disturbed sleep pattern

  • Irregular eating habits

  • Feelings of detachment

  • Loneliness

  • Deviation from regular activities like going to School or Work

  • Unexplained anger or sadness

However symptoms can take up any form, any abnormal behaviour could be considered a symptom.

It’s better to check rather than sit in silence, and even if it’s only a little problem it doesn't mean you don't deserve help.

CELEBRITY CHAOS

Okay so this week has been completely chaos in the celebrity world. One event sticks out in particular and I'm sure all my friends are wondering why I'm not doing the whole post on that but to be honest it's still a very sensitive topic. haha. Nevertheless I will still write a bit about it so read to the end if you wan't to know why I am heartbroken. lol.

So to start with; James Bay released his amazing debut album on Monday 23rd March. It is entitled Chaos And The Calm and it is already on its way to becoming number 1 in the charts. I have listened to the album so many times already and he really is so talented. At first the songs may sound fairly similar but once you have listened to them all more than once you can start to appreciate them more. I have to say my favourites are Move Together and Let It Go at the moment. It's defiantly worth a listen so go buy it off itunes!

This week we also got confirmation from the one and only Ed Sheeran about the name of his record label which is called...'Gingerbread'. I think that is amazing! Ed has made a deal with Warner music and can now start signing people. In fact he has already signed his first person who is called Jamie Lawson so don't go forgetting that name!

As well as this Taylor Swift has gone and bought some internet domain names which could potentially be an embarrassment for her otherwise. Tay Tay now obtains the rights to 'TaylorSwift.porn' and 'TaylorSwift.adult' which is quite odd. However Taylor is doing her job to stop the haters from hating because they would be joining the other new adult domain names that are going to be released to the internet in June if she had not taken control of them...

I am fascinated with Kendall Jenner and she has been getting up close and personal to Justin Bieber recently in a new shoot for Vogue. There have been rumours of sparks between the pair and with Kendall's similar features to Selena, who knows?! Kendall was also announced as the new face of Calvin Klein. She is the model of the latest-limited edition campaign which is the #mycalvins denim series.

And last of all. I don't feel prepared to be writing about this so expect waffle and slight cringe. I am literally so shocked about Zayn leaving One Direction and very upset. I know so many people can't emphasize with 50% of teenage girls at the moment but just don't judge ok. One Direction have made me happy for nearly 5 years and it's so sad to see Zayn leave but I honestly respect his decision so much and their health means more to me than anything else. They all truly deserve a break for once but I also think Louis, Liam, Niall and Harry deserve credit for carrying on when they are probably just as upset as everyone else. I just hope everyone is happy at the end of the day and I won't stop supporting them. {also just thanks to my friends for being supportive and not laughing at me and actually being there for me haha. You guys are fab and deserve a clap for putting up with me.}

Marvellous sausage rolls: Baking

Marvellous Sausage Rolls:

Oh my goodness guys these are amazing not going to lie. I've been wanting to make these for you for ages and I've finally made them so enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • A pack of sausage meat
  • 1 onion
  • 1tbsp sugar
  • 2tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 pack puff pastry
  • 1 egg

  • Method:

  • preheat your oven to 200 degrees
  • Firstly, cut 1 onion up into long slices (you most probably will cry doing this) and pop it into a frying pan that has been greased with butter. Cook these for about 2 minutes and then add the sugar and balsamic vinegar.

  • Whilst they are cooking, you can roll out your pastry. It will be easier if you cut the pack in half and roll out each section. You want to roll it out in a rectangle shape until its the width of a pound.
  • Once the onions are cooked (they will be soft and look caramelised) add them to the sausage meat with the breadcrumbs and mix together with your hands until its all combined.
  • Then pick up a small handful and squish it into a sausage looking shape and place it on the puff pastry as shown below:
Then brush egg around the sides of the pastry around the meat and then fold it over. Use a fork to seal it all together. Then you can brush them all over with egg and pop them on a baking tray to cook for 30 minutes.

My Mac Pro Palette | Beauty

When I first discovered Mac, I knew little about the brand, despite it's hype and even less about it's 'pro' range. It was difficult for me to work out how you filled the palette and which parts you needed to buy to make it. But now I've started earning and I've finally finished my Mac Pro Palette which only took a few months. Eeek. It's not my fault their eyeshadows are so workable, pigmented and beeeeeautiful. Anyway this is my finished palette. As you can see I mostly stick to nudes however, many of the darker colours can be easily be worked for a night/occasion/party time look. It's a mixture of a few matte shades and most of the others have a subtle sparkle.

I would say my most used eyeshadows are 'Naked Lunch', 'Sable', 'Charcoal Brown' and 'Satin Taupe'. I use 'Naked Lunch' almost everyday all over the lid and add one of the darker shades in my crease and under my eye such as 'Satin Taupe', 'Sable', 'Embark' or 'Woodwinked'. 'Nylon' is amazing for a brow bone highlight and the inner corner whilst 'Smut' is great for lining your eyes. I love all of these shades so much and genuinely use them all regularly. If I'm wearing eyeshadow (I look dead without it), it's likely to be from this palette purely for the staying power, blend-ability and colour payoff.

Naked Lunch (Frost),
Vanilla (Pearl),
Nylon (Frost)

Era (Satin),
All That Glitters (Veluxe Pearl),
Jest (Frost)

Sable (Frost),
Woodwinked (Veluxe Pearl),
Patina (Frost)

Satin Taupe (Frost),
Twinks (Veluxe Pearl),
Charcoal Brown (Matte)

Smut (Pearl),
Embark (Matte),
Cranberry (Frost)

Despite a ridiculous yet justified price tag, I am so in love with my complete palette. I'm still not 100% happy with the order of the eyeshadows but I'll get round to that one day. There are still plenty of shades on my hit-list ('Amber Lights', 'Expensive Pink', 'Omega', 'Mythology' and 'Sketch' to name a few) but I'll have to wait a long time before I start the next palette!

Batik: Textiles

Batik

(Pictures are not my own)

Batik is a very simple technique that simply involves using hot wax to block out areas of fabric, so they are not coloured by dye.

You need:

  • A hot wax pot
  • Melted wax
  • Wax tools or paint brush
  • White cotton fabric
  • Dye bath
1.
Heat your wax pot, so the wax is melted. Put your tools or paint brush into the wax.

2.
After lightly pencilling out your design, go over it in the hot wax, using your chosen tool.

3.
If you want a webbed look to your final sample, then scrunch up the wax so it cracks before you dye it.

4.
Place the fabric into your dye bath.

5.
When you've taken the fabric out of the dye bath and it has dried, then you need to iron off the wax. This is done by putting the fabric in between two pieces of paper, then simply ironing over the paper till all the wax has melted off. you may have to refresh the paper.

If you want mutliy tonal/coloured fabric with different patterns. Then simply add more wax patterns and dye it again. Play with it until you find your style.

The Round Up: Solar Eclipse

On Friday this week, not only was it national happiness day, the last day of winter and more importantly mine and blogger Ellie's birthday, Britian was plunged into darkness as the Moon came between us and the Sun for a solar eclipse.

In all parts of the UK, the eclipse reached at least 83% with the darkness peaking at 9:35AM. Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions, London and the South East just saw the grey day get slightly gloomier. The best place to see it was the Shetland Islands, where 97% of the Sun's disc obscured by the Moon.

Millions of people in Britain and Northern Europe glimpsed the best solar eclipse in years and next year Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawsi and the Pacific, estimated for the 9th March. Sadly, the UK will no experience a solar eclipse on this scale again until 2026. Let's hope in 11 years time, us poor Kentish people will actually see the eclipse and not just the grey gloom of Great British weather.

Helping Mental Health - The Little Things: The Serious Stuff

Mental health effects a lot of young people, much more than most people realise. Over the last few years there has been an increase in diagnosis of mental health disorders across the younger population, the most common being depression, anxiety, eating disorders and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Surveys show that 1 of of 10 young people have a mental health disorder, and that’s just those who have been diagnosed. If you’re young, chances are you know someone affected by some sort of mental health disorder.

So what can you do? Chances are, you aren’t a trained psychologist. Helping out your friends may not so easy. If a friend trusts you enough to share that personal information with you, then you may feel obliged to help or sympathise with something that’s hard to understand. How can you help easily?

1.  If they're willing, talk to them about it!

This helps because not only does it show that you're interested and actually care about your friend, but it is also the best way of finding out information about their illness. Everyones mental health is personal to them, and mental health disorders affect individuals differently. The only way to know, is to ask!

2.   Respect their wishes.

If someone doesn't want to do or talk about something, understand that it’s probably a sensitive subject and not at all personal. Also if they are being somewhat over dramatic or clingy, it’s likely to be due to the illness. Put up with it for their sake.

3.   Give them space.

It’s important to know when to leave people alone. Sometimes they might just be having a bad day, and need some time alone for themselves. If they come off as rude or cold, it’s probably not intentional. Sometimes they just need a little bit of downtime to recharge their social batteries.

4.   Stay with them.

I know the previous point said to leave them alone, but sometimes people want the opposite. If they're feeling unwanted and alone, then having you there supporting them does help. Don't assume they want space unless they tell you, because accidentally avoiding them or not talking to them will make them feel abandoned.

5.   Offer other means of help!

Often, young people are more likely to tell their friends or siblings about their problems than their parents. Parents come with some sort of authority, and that is intimidating and scary to spill out your raw emotions to. Parents also come from an older generation, and are therefore less likely to sympathise and understand these problems. You are not their parents, you are their friend, and this means they will trust you more. Use this to make them feel like they aren't alone, and try to think rationally for them. A mind hindered by mental illness may not even realise it is ill, let alone seek help. If the situation is really bad, try to nudge the person towards finding professional help. This can be done without parents in absolute confidentiality and can be extremely useful, don't be afraid to ask for help!

6.   Help them see the sunny side.

It may sound cheesy, but a good laugh always helps a bad mood. At first, let them get everything off their chest (if they want to), and tell them you understand and sympathise with their problems. Then you can take them out somewhere fun, or just stay in and do something together. The point is you do something nice with them, to help them feel a little better. It’s not to distract from the problem, or ignore it, more to help ease the pain and display the good parts of life. Plus, there’s nothing wrong with having a good time!

All in all, just try to be a good friend. Though you may not understand or comprehend what is going on in your friend’s head, you can still be there for them. You are their friend for a reason, after all.

And if you're struggling with mental health, stay strong. Turn to a friend or a sibling or a parent. And remember, more people love you than you think.

What do we say to the God of Death?

Roast of Justin Bieber!

This week Justin Bieber got the roasting he deserved held at the Sony Pictures studio in Culver City, California.  It was all part of the Comedy Central show hosted by 'roast master' Kevin Hart and included celebrities such as Snoop Dog, Ludacris to name a few who were all part of the roasting of Bieber.

The night obviously attracted a crowd of A-listers who were all dressed to impress at the event. Justin agreed to get the grilling after the last few years of his bad and reckless behaviour but now insists he regrets what he's done and he 'wasn't trying to be a jerk'. Once all the jokes were made he made an apology saying: 'I turned a lot of people off over the past few years' and 'I'm looking forward to being someone who you guys can all look at and be proud off'. It seems that Justin has changed into a whole new person and it is good to see him maturing and actually taking some responsibility for his actions.

He has been going on the Ellen show every week since his transformation and talked to her about the roasting.

The episode will be aired on Monday 30th March and I am very excited to watch!

Cheese straws: Baking

Cheese Straws!

So this week I thought I'd switch things up a bit and do some savoury baking! These literally took me 15 minutes to make which is helpful because I was super hungry when I got home from school! Here is how to make these delicious snacks:

Ingredient's:

  • Puff pastry
  • Cheese
  • Milk
  • Flour

Method:

  • So firstly I am going to be using pre- made pastry simply because puff pastry takes a lot of time to make and I was being lazy.
  •  I cut a chunk out of this and rolled it out until it was about half a cm thick.
  • Then I cut small rectangles out and brushed them with milk so that the cheese can stick to them.
  • Then I sprinkled over some grated cheese
  • Then grab either end and twist
  • Cook in the oven for 12 minutes and then enjoy!

Concert Etiquette: Life, Advice and Rants

So last week I got the chance to go and see Halestorm at the Roundhouse theater in Camden. For those of you who don't know, Halestorm are a female fronted rock band from Pennsylvania that would probably be best know for winning a Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance with their song Love Bites So Do I. I could talk a while about them but sadly that isn't what I had in mind for this blog post...though here's a picture of the night below:

Anyway what I actually want to write about this week is concert etiquette. To clarify 'concert etiquette' refers to a set of social norms observed by those attending a musical performance. We all have certain issues when it comes to concerts and the people that attend them with you. I find this more a common problem in standing areas. Thousands of people squished together like sardines may not be everyone's idea of fun however, its the price many of us are willing to take in order to be as close as possible to the action. Though it can be one of the best nights of your life, certain people may manage to ruin it by their lack of knowledge of 'concert etiquette'. So that is where this post comes in handy! Listen to the standard etiquette below and you wont have to fear about being the person everyone vents about the next day.

1. If someone wants to leave LET THEM.
Many like the atmosphere of a cramped, sweaty messy of concert goers however, others may realise it isn't for them. Its something you don't know you like until you are in that situation so please allow anyone who is uncomfortable to leave. Blocking people in so your as close as possible can be scary for some so think about the people around you.

2. Move if there is space but DON'T SHOVE.
If you can get closer then by all means move into that space but don't think its your right to push anyone in front of you. They have probably been standing in that one spot for a number of hours so to be honest, they deserve to be there. If you come rocking up 30 minutes before a set is about to begin and force-ably moving everyone in your path then you need to reevaluate your choices. Where you raised in a barn?

3. During the actual performance STOP TALKING
There is no problem saying something quickly between songs or a casual comment here or there but not through the entire concert. The middle of a concert is not the perfect time to for you to discuss who's going to the party next weekend or what you are going to wear. Or even on going commentary about whoever is playing, just enjoy the music you have paid to see!

There are plenty more that I am sure sprung to you mind the moment I mentioned 'concert etiquette'. Going to concerts are amazing, nothing beats seeing the artist you love up close and personal with their live music ringing through your ears. Just remember its not just you in that crowd, others want to experience the same as you. Enjoy whatever music you are into and always make sure you and everyone else are having the best possible time.

Soap & Glory Favourites

I love Soap & Glory. A lot. The puns, the pretty warm shades and the black and pink packaging. I have not found a Soap & Glory product I have been disappointed with. So many of their products could be high end. These are a few of my favourites that I use nearly everyday.

Archery Brow Tint & Precision Shaping Pencil
My eyebrows have no in between. They're either shaped well and stay put or straggly and all over the place. This product is my favourite brow product ever, it makes them look so natural, in line and shaped whilst totally avoiding the drawn-on look.

Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Stick in 'Nudist'
I love this sooooo much. The product reminds me of Clinique's Chubby Sticks just 10x better. It's such a subtle, pretty, pinky colour. It doesn't dry my lips out or make them overly sticky either. It's slick and adds so much shine and volume. I pretty much take it everywhere with me now. It nearly went through the wash in my jeans the other day and I might have cried. It also has a really nice subtle vanilla smell (think MAC lipstick).

Trick and Treatment Concealer
Tired? Bags? Dark circles? This concealer is so brightening for the under eyes and so nice to blend. It's quite a thick formula but doesn't feel it and doesn't budge for a good few hours.

Solar Powder
A cult drugstore bronzing classic. The super blend-able, complimentary shades are really nice and warm with my skin tone yet still so subtle. This is really nice for contouring cheekbones and so easy to use.

Supercat Liquid Black Eyeliner Pen
I only ever use eyeliner pens or gel liner. I can never work with messy products, I need quick and convenient. This one is probably one of the best eyeliner pens out there. It's long lasting and doesn't budge like so many others do after 10 minutes. It's so good for a cat flick because it's nib is just the right thickness.

Lid Stuff Eyeshadow Quad
I wasn't expecting a lot, I just really liked the shades in this quad because I'm such a neutral shade girl. Wow. There is so much pigmentation on these colours. They're super blend-able and all work so well together. It's quickly becoming my everyday quad, this one is again, always in my makeup bag. And there's no stupid spongey eye shadow stick because Soap & Glory think you'd prefer to use 'a proper eye shadow brush'.
