The Importance of Representation: The Serious Stuff

As a society, we are massively effected by the media. It defines our ideas about what we don’t already know, shaping assumptions and stereotypes based on what it presents to us. The media is our gateway to the rest of the world, outside our own personal bubbles. This means that what it does and doesn’t show us is incredibly important.

Representation in the media is something people have been fighting for for a long time. It effects a lot of the population: women, ethnic groups, the LGBATQ community, people with disabilities, mental health patients and many more. Chances are, if you’re not angry about representation, you’re probably already being represented.

Let’s get some stats in here, shall we?

Representation of women:
  •  10% of all films have a gender balanced cast (20% in the UK, 0% in Australia, France, Japan, India and the USA).
  • 31% of speaking roles are occupied by females.
  • 23% of films have a female protagonist.
  • Women in film at 2x more likely to be shown in sexual clothing.
  • Out of those women sexualised in film, 36% are teenagers, 32% adults and 15% middle aged.
  • Comments about appearance are 5x more likely to be made towards female characters than male.
  • 24.2% of females will have a nude scene, and 38.5% are thin. This may seem low, but it is compared to 11.5% and 15.7% for males.
  • Male characters are 22.5% more likely to be employed.
  • In the industry females make up 22.7% of producers, 19.7% of writers and 7% of directors.
Representation of race:
  • Across 100 top-grossing films of 2012, only 10.8% of speaking characters are Black, 4.2% are Hispanic, 5% are Asian, and 3.6% are from other (or mixed race) ethnicities. 76.2% are white.
  • Hispanic characters are 8.3% more likely to be shown in sexy attire than white characters, and 7% more likely to be fully nude.
  • In the industry 5.5% of directors are black males, for females this drops to less than 1%.
  • It is shown that when the director is black, the characters are 42.7% more likely to be black.
Representation of LGBT:
  • 13.7% of characters identified as either lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. That’s 14 out of the 102 major films reviewed. 25 LGBT characters in total.
  • 64.7% of these featured gay male characters, 23.5% featured lesbian characters, 17.7% contained bisexual characters, and 11.8% contained transgender female characters.
  • Male LGBT characters outnumbered female characters 64% to 36%.
  • Of the 25 different characters counted, 19 were white (76%) while only 3 were Black/African American (12%), 2 were Asian/ Pacific Islander (8%), and 1 was Latino (4%).
  • Of the 102 films reviewed, 19 were comedies and 8 contained LGBT characters.
All of this simply proves the point of unequal representation, which is something most of the people reading this will know about and understand already. What this blog post is really about, however, is the importance of equal representation.

As I mentioned in the first paragraph, the media depicts how we see the world. It’s supposed to be a representation of how things are, or how things should be. So when we see that women are almost 2x more sexualised than men, it can be really damaging.

This is most effective on the youth. Young people have smaller views of the world than adults, as they haven’t been around as long to learn and form their own thoughts and opinions. So when young girls see that 91.5% of legal professionals in film are male, it shows them that being a lawyer is only for men.

This unequal representation also breeds hate through xenophobia (fear of something different). People, in general, don’t like things they don’t know or understand. Due to the limited positive representation of people with disabilities, the LGBATQ community and people with mental health issues, things like this are not seen as ‘normal’.

People with disabilities are seen as weak and are used as a pity device. The LGBATQ community are seen as unnatural, confused or just used for comedic purposes (this especially applies to trans people), discounting the seriousness of LGBT completely. People with mental health issues are seen as aggressive and dangerous; there is a reason why an insane asylum is still one of the most popular settings for horror films/games.

What I’m trying to say is: lack of representation displays things that are not shown to be not normal. This is extremely toxic because it gives people a twisted idea of the norm, breeding xenophobia and hateful stereotypes.

It is also worth noting that data I have used above is for film only. Media is not just film, there are many platforms such as Television, the Internet and things like Video Games where the statistics are very different.

In the gaming industry especially, there is a massive gender divide. The amount of female characters drops from 31% (in film) to 15%. This drops further for female protagonists, making up only 4%, and only 40% of games have the option to take up a female character in multiplayer. As a lover of games, this is especially disappointing. Seeing no option for my gender to be the hero in almost every game I have seen or played is extremely discouraging. Furthermore, when there is a female character, she is usually used as a love interest for the male protagonist, or as someone to kill off so the male has a reason to do something. Over 80% of female characters are either sexualised, scantily clad or a vision of beauty, created for a straight male audience. Even though recent studies have shown that 48% of gamers are female.

In summary, representation in media is something that effects a lot of us without us realising it. It is something that needs to change drastically, the sooner the better. Luckily, there are a lot of people being made aware of these issues and calling industries out on unequal representation. Recently, there has been many complaints towards Ubisoft for their decision to make another male protagonist in their Assassin’s Creed series, so far an all male line up. This pushed them to give ‘Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China’ a female protagonist.

Pushes like these need to continue, as equal representation will not only encourage and include a much wider group of people, but also give a much fairer example of something other than the straight white male. This will decrease xenophobia and hateful stereotypes, decreasing sexism, racism and homophobia in the process. This is especially helpful for todays youth.

Brit Awards 2015!

This past month has been award ceremony after award ceremony! Every year I look forward to the Brit Awards because they are amazing and one of my favourite nights of the year and 2015's were no different. The evening was live from the o2 Arena in London on Wednesday night and we saw a whole array of superb celebrities inside the building on our television screens. The wonderful Ant & Dec hosted the night for the first time in a staggering 14 years and they were absolutely amazing! Read on for my summary and review of the crazy ceremony...

The performances this year were amazing and quite unforgettable. Taylor Swift flawlessly opened the show singing the brilliant Blank Space. Kanye made quite the impression and Ed Sheeran gave a beautiful performance of Bloodstream. Of course, the person everyone is talking about... Madonna. The Queen of pop herself returned to the Brits stage for the first time in 20 years and made quite the return. Despite the tragic tumble she persevered and very professionally carried on with the fantastic performance. She truly is a remarkable woman! Other impeccable and absolutely wonderful acts were the stunning Sam Smith, Paloma Faith, Royal Blood, George Ezra and Take That.

Taylor Swift
All the winners were incredibly deserving and Sam Smith went away with the most adding more to his award collection! Below is the full list of winners:

British Group- Royal Blood

British Female Solo Artist- Paloma Faith

You can check out who I predicted would be bagging an award right here. It is defiantly worth a look!

I think it is safe to say that British music is absolutely amazing right now and there are some very talented artists who we can look forward to hearing more from in 2015!

Pizza Shortbread: Baking

  AMAZING PIZZA SHORTBREAD

This week I decided to mix two of my favourite things together and make shortbread that looks like pizza. Amazing I know! This was sooo much fun to make and although it didn't turn out exactly how I wanted it to, I was still impressed with the result. Plus it tastes amazing.
So if you have a sweet tooth like me and want to know how to make this, keep reading!

Ingridients:

  • 250g butter
  • 125 sugar
  • 250g pl flour
  • 125g semolina/ cornflour

Method:

Preheat your oven to 150°c
  • Firstly, cream the butter and sugar together until, well, creamy.
  • Then sift the flour and semolina in and mix until it is all combined. Don't worry if it doesn't come to a dough, just make sure all the butter is incorporated with the dry ingredients.
Semolina is the hard grains left from the milling of flour. This will give the shortbread a good texture.

  • Then split the mixture between two greased cake tins and then press the dough down so it is compact.

  • Sprinkle some extra sugar over the top and cook in the oven for 53 minutes or until the shortbread is golden.
  • Once they are cooked, cool for 10 minutes, then gently cut the circles into pizza slices. Leave them in the tin to cool for 40 minutes or so.
  • Then mix together some icing sugar with water (only a few drops until you get the consistency of golden syrup)
  • Colour half of this red (tomato puree) and leave the other white (mozzarella)
  • Spread the red around the edges of the 'pizza' crust and then drizzle the white over the rest. Decorate with some red coloured sugar and some white chocolate chips. You can also make other toppings such as meat feast (milk chocolate pieces) or peppers (green coloured fondant)
.

Hope you enjoyed this post! See you next week!

Cheering Up Friends: Life, Advice and Rants

I don't know about you but I cannot stand to see my nearest and dearest upset, angry or usually quite. When you see them like that its like a piece of you hurts with them and whatever you try and do doesn't seem to work. Its hard cheering up the friends you love, it is like convincing the sun of its own warmth. Here are some of my tips to let them know you will always try to make it better.

1.Empathize not sympathize
Sympathy is about feeling sorry for someone, rather than feeling their pain with them. You want to feel what they are feeling and let them know that you're engaging in their pain with them. It creates an understanding and makes them feel like they are not going through this pain alone, you will always be right beside them.

2. Don't make it about you
This goes with the point above. There is a difference between relating to their problems as a method of helping them not feel alone and turning the whole issue about you. It is a easy yet costly mistake to make. Ask open-ending questions instead of jumping in with your feelings, experiences and perceptions.

3. Listen to them
Take care and attention to everything they tell you and make sure they know it matters to you. Active listening especially shows you care about them and that they are being heard. More often than not, knowing someone takes time to listen to their thoughts and feelings is the biggest gesture.

4. Make them laugh
I always find laughter to be the best medicine. Try to reminisce about funny memories shared together or embarrassing stories about yourself. It is also a distraction technique, focusing their attention on the past times you and their other friends have shared together that makes an inseparable bond that keeps your happy.

5. Be optimistic
Show them there can be a silver lining to their situation even if they cant see it for themselves. Being optimistic is a mindset and can be infectious when used right. For example if your friend doesn't have confidence in there own self then show them that everyone has strengths and weaknesses, this is what makes us unique and beautiful. Make sure they know you will always love them for who they are.

We all have friends that mean the world to us, whether its many or a select few. They are in our lives for what we all hope is the majority of it therefore we must strive for their total happiness. For me, my friends are one of the best things in my life and I would always do whatever I can to make their lives the best they can be. Friends show their love in times of trouble, not happiness. The one piece of advice I hope you gather from this is that the best way to cheer up a friend is for them to know that they make your world a better place.

Favourite Dresses & Make-up Looks | Oscars 2015

I love the Oscars. Correction, I love every award ceremony. I love the idea of celebrating pure talent and kind nature. Buttttt, I also love the glitz and glam and so I thought I'd share with you my favourite looks from the night.

Favourite Dresses
Anna Kendrick - Peach is a risky colour, especially in the winter but Anna Kendrick pulls it off flawlessly. She shows off her perfect petite figure with minimalist sparkle.
---
Rosamund Pike - Possibly my favourite dress from the night, a stunning red number never goes wrong.
---
Chloe Grace Mortez - Floral, silky, lacy and pretty. Chloe's dress even has pockets.
---
Emma Stone - I am biased as I adore Emma. Her golden/green dress twinned with her pale skin and gorgeous ginger hair is a match made in heaven.

Reese Witherspoon - This lady still isn't showing any sign of aging and the black and white number flaunts her waist to hip ratio brilliantly.
---
Rita Ora - A glamorous black and silky custom Marchesa dress with gold detail. Rita looks incredible and I don't think many people can pull off a mermaid style dress.
---
Jennifer Lopez - Again, believe it or not JLo is 45 but looks about 22. This is another of my absolute favourites as the golden princess-like gown compliments her glowing complexion amazingly.
---
Felicity Jones - The decorative top of the silky, silvery gown adds just the right amount of detail to her outfit.

Sienna Miller - A lacy black number complete with bows that still manages to look effortless and elegant.
---
Jennifer Aniston - Showing off her curves and covered in sparkles, this dress makes Aniston glow.
---
Scarlett Johansson - The deep green low cut dress with a matching necklace flaunts Johansson's fabulous figure. She even wore mis-matched earrings which looked really cool.
---
Guiliana Rancic - Matching lace and red for a red carpet is a definite win. Then again, I love anything red.

Favourite Looks
Kiera Knightley - A strong brow, amazing cheekbones and pink lips gives Knightley natural beauty.
---
Reese Witherspoon - A gentle smokey eye and a nude lip is another simple and youthful look.
---
Margot Robbie - I think I'm in love with her and her instant glamour. An orangey full lip  with simple eyeliner makes her blue eyes look ahhh-mazing.
---
Beyoncé Knowles - Not that she doesn't always look flawless but the coral/pink lip is great.

Carmen Ejogo - My favourite lip of the evening. The raspberry shade is to die for. Paired with a wash of coordinating blush, this look wins all the awards.
---
Emma Stone - As usual, Emma's sexy curls and another peachy/orange lipstick makes her pale skin look incredible.
---
Lady Gaga - How great (and normal) does Gaga look? A unique flare with red accessories but, a warm and shimmery eye makeup and a bold red lip is perfect for the Oscars.
---
Jessica Chastain - She killed it with a simple 60's cat eye and her trademark red lip/mermaid wave combo.

Sienna Miller - Simple, heavy liner and flawless glowy skin makes a gorgeous glam look for Sienna.
---
Felicity Jones - Felicity's after-party look is very Audrey Hepburn-esque with a dark smokey eyeshadow look and bright lip to bring out her blue eyes.
---
Chloe Grace Mortez - Her after-party look is so grown up and classy I'm jealous. Again, a bright lip to contrast with a dark outfit and eyes.
---
Rosamund Pike - Simple and elegant and pretty much flawless. If I had her skin, I'd be content forever.

Rita Ora - Although I very highly doubt she did it herself, if I could do eyeliner flicks like that I would do them everyday. Rita's strong brow and amazing cheeks add to the whole look.
---
Dakota Johnson - Another look I really love. A beautiful dark and well blended smokey eye and a classic lip.
---
Chrissy Teigen - Unbelivable beauty. The burgungy lip is my favourite part of this look. I love me a dark lip!

The Academy Awards were and always are an incredible, glamorous occasion. I loved the Oscars this year. I am as always so proud of Neil Patrick Harris in everything he does and for hosting such a great show. Roll on 2016!

The Round Up: The Oscars

Today's the day when the big names in film gather to be awarded for the hard work of bringing entertainment to our cinemas. It could be none other than the 87th Academy Awards, the Oscars! This year, it is to be hosted by the halrious Neil Patrick Harris at Hollywood's 3,300 seat Dolby Theatre. I am particularly excited about Neil Patrick Harris hosting, many saying he has big shoes to fill after Ellen Degeneres hosted last year however I think Harris will steal the limelight as the loveable magical character we know he is, promising "a hint of magic" at the ceremony which starts 23:00 GMT.

Those battling for this years Best Picture Award are eight big titles which have dominated not only our cinemas but every Academy Award this season. The contenders include:
-American Sniper
-Birdman
-Boyhood
-The Grand Budapest Hotel
-The Imitaion Game
-Selma
-The Theory of Everything
-Whiplash

Oscars experts expect top prize to go to either Birdman or Boyhood, Scott Feinberg (the Hollywood Reporter's Oscars expert) thinks Birdman is a safe bet. However, dark horse American Sniper has taken in £259 million at worldwide box office, making it the highest grossing film among the Best Picture nominees.

The British are taking the Oascar's by storm, leading the British charge is Eddie Redmayne who is
strongly tipped to win top prize with his astounding performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is also in the running for Best Actor with his role as Alan Turning in The Imitation Game. Other British nominees include Rosamund Pike, Felicity
Jones and a personal favourite, Kiera Knightly. Good luck to all waving the Great Britain flag at the Oscars.

Here's to another Oscars, let's hope next years box office reaches the standards of the nominees tonight!

What Is Polysexuality?: The Serious Stuff

I consider myself to know a fair bit about gender and sexuality, if someone names a gender identity or sexual orientation I’ll probably know what it is. Scrolling the internet earlier today, I saw mention of something I didn’t recognise, and decided to do some digging. I thought I'd share what I found.

If I give you the word 'polysexuality’ your mind may jump to polyamorous or polyamory, as mine did. A polyamorous relationship is a romantic relationship between three or more people, where all are comfortable with sharing each other. This however, is not what polysexuality is.

In it’s simplest form, polysexuality is attraction outside the gender binary. That doesn't mean attraction to only people who are outside the gender binary, it means attraction where gender isn’t a factor.

Polysexual Flag
Almost all sexual orientation is based off of gender. Hetrosexual is the same gender. Homosexual is the opposite gender. Bisexual is the same and opposite gender. It all factors down to who you are gender-wise. Polysexual is different. It is the mantra of ‘I like who I like, regardless of gender.

The most difficult thing I had to grasp about polysexuality was the difference between it and pansexuality and bisexuality. Polysexuals like everyone, the word ‘poly’ even means many. How is this different from bisexuality and pansexuality?

Both of these are focused on gender, with ‘bi’ being two and ‘pan’ being all. Bisexuals and pansexuals feel attraction to gender, whereas polysexuals do not. Though polysexuals may feel attraction to a lot of people like bi and pan people do, it’s just not in the same way. To quote someone’s description of why they identify as poly, ‘I fell in love with people, not plumbing’.

All in all, polysexuality is a completely different way of looking at the nature of sexual attraction, and definitely something I think more people should know about.

Upcoming 2015 Artists!

There is no doubt that 2015 is going to be another huge year for the music industry and for this weeks post I am going to talk about who I think will be breaking into the charts.

James BayWell of course the incredible James Bay who has already started to become recognized is defiantly going to become a huge artist in 2015. James is a British indie pop singer- songwriter. He has already been awarded with this years Brits Critic's Choice Award and is following in the footsteps of previous winners such as Adele, Jessie J and Emeli Sande who have all been very successful. The singer has already performed to large crowds as he has been the support act for Tom Odell and John Newman. His single 'Hold Back The River' has become an instant hit and is now loved by the nation. I can't wait for James to release his debut album 'Chaos And The Calm' which is expected to be released 23rd March.
Royal Blood are a British rock duo who have been around since 2013. They have already performed at many events and released music, however at the end of 2014 they hit the headlines for their single 'Ten Tonne Skeleton' and then shortly afterwards announced a UK tour. This year the band will be supporting Foo Fighters along with Iggy Pop during their 2015 UK & USA tour which will be huge for the pair. The NME awards were on the 18th February and Royal Blood were awarded 2 awards for Best New Band and Best Live Band.

Florrie is amazingly talented British pop singer, drummer and songwriter. Florrie is another artist who has been around for a number of years. She recently supported the Amity Fest tour which was ran by some massive British Youtubers such as Zoella and Marcus Butler. As well as this Florrie teamed up with H&M to produce a retro visual for her new single 'Too Young To Remember' which is now being played on Radio 1 and I think it will be a huge hit in the upcoming weeks! I can't wait for the rising star to release more music.

Lastly Haim are an American pop rock band consisting of 3 sisters and a drummer. Haim is actually one of Ellie's favourite bands and they were awarded with an NME in 2014 for Best International Band. They have featured on the original soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1 and they contributed to vocals on Calvin Harris' track 'Pray to God'. They were nominated for Best New Artist at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards and the band are set to support Taylor Swift at selected dates on The 1989 World Tour in the summer.

I can't wait for the amazing music set to be released in 2015 and I think British music especially is great right now!

Benefit Roller Lash | First Impressions - Beauty

It's no big secret how much I love Benefit as a brand. They're quirky and pretty and most of their products are holy grail for me. I absoloutely love the 'They're Real!' mascara, my favourite product from Benefit. Elle magazine's free gift this month is a sample size of Benefit's new masacra 'Roller Lash' and I have never been so excited about a mascara launch ever.

I was expecting a lot as a huge 'They're Real!' fangirl. And luckily, I was pleased with the mini tester I tried from Elle. My lashes look fuller, separated and surprisingly longer too. I'm impressed by the colour difference too and just how much more awake I look with this mascara applied. The curl it claims to give is subtle but feminine and fluttery nonetheless.

As always with Benefit, the packaging is adorable yet sophisticated and very girly. It certainly looks high end anyway. The brush itself is plastic and this pleases me as I dislike bristled brushes a majority of the time. It's also slightly curved, allowing you to reach all your eyelashes for an even coat. The formula is really nice and feels very natural.

However, I'm in two minds about the longevity of this product. It kept it's place well and my eyelashes didn't sag throughout a 9 hour work shift. However, it was a little smudgy in the corners of my eyes at around the 4 hour mark and I was starting to wish I'd bought a cotton bud with me.

Overall, I'm really impressed with this new release and will be saving my pennies for when the product hits the counters.

Privacy: Life, Advice and Rants

Quite a few people don’t want everyone to know their whole private self, whether that will be their sexuality, parts of their personality or even their personal information. Privacy helps individuals maintain their autonomy and individuality; people define themselves by exercising power over information about them. Even if privacy is not in itself a fundamental right, it is necessary to be able to protect other fundamental rights we have.

Constantly there are issues surrounding privacy being breached by companies and even other human beings. It doesn't always have to be computer hackers stealing your information off of your Twitter, it can be people you meet every day that want you to reveal more than you are comfortable. We should be in control of what certain individuals know about us and not have fear of random strangers turning up at our door.

Celebrities struggle with keeping a lot of their personal life to themselves as they are constantly in the media spot light as well as their own fans even pressuring them to reveal more than they desire. Such examples include private nude photos of people such as Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence and child star Dylan Sprouse being publicly released without their consent. Most recently Canadian actress Natasha Negovanlis, known for her role as leather trouser wearing lesbian vampire on the Vervegirl web series Carmilla, has recently been dealing with a fan finding her home address and another stalking her friends and families Facebook accounts looking for pictures of her. Below is parts of the Tumblr post she uploaded explaining the stalking situation.  The full post cannot be found on the site anymore.

Do not be alarmed, they are not currently stalking me at work. What they are doing however , is virtually stalking all my friends and employers from both my past and present – perhaps in order to be the first person to post photos of me that my fans haven’t seen yet?...

And yes, it is a bit weird for me to see photos from my past spread on the internet – especially since I don’t remember some of them being taken, and some from deeply personal events...

The only sad part form me is that it invades the privacy of the people I know and care about...and now there are pictures of them all over Tumblr for thousands to see...’

I personally do not understand how certain people feel the right to know everything about a person and even go to the extent to stalk. They justify it by believing because they are celebrities they should be telling them, this is of course completely ridiculous. No one should feel pressured to releasing more of their private life than they believe is acceptable whether they are famous or not. Living in a world driven by social media has made it so easy to find personal information about anyone. Stalking someone on the internet is no different than following them in the street; it is only considered less creepy because you can’t actually see them. This cannot be seen as tolerable, it is still essentially stalking.

I’m not saying don’t use any social media because they will all use your information against you. I am an avid Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram and general internet user that enjoys going on these sites daily. In our current generation it is common for most of us to use these sites however we must still be safe when knowing how much is suitable for the whole world to have at a push of a button. In digital era, privacy must be a priority. Historically, privacy was almost implicit, because it was hard to find and gather information. But in the digital world, whether its satellites or just what you click on, we need to have more explicit rules. Privacy is not an option and it shouldn't be the price we accept for just getting on the internet.

Though everyone’s privacy should be equally respected and acknowledge this however isn't the case. It makes me frustrated when some people believe they have a right to know personal information when the truth is, if someone doesn't tell you it, you don’t need to know! So always know your limits, never reveal more than you are comfortable with and just stay safe.
